October Brings Observance of Domestic Violence Awareness

Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (SDVSAS) in Mount Vernon is promoting “Purple Light Nights”.  The color purple has been used to symbolically remember victims of abuse. The Purple Light Nights campaign expands the symbolism to encompass a greater public awareness of domestic violence issues.  By simply shining a purple light from a front porch, business window, tree light, or some other visible location, supporters can signify remembrance of victims who have lost their lives from domestic violence, support of survivors working at a better life, and hope to those still living in abusive homes.
Colleen of SDVSAS says, “This campaign is a good way to raise awareness of the issues and what we do here at the agency.”
Purple Light Nights is the brainchild of the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force.  The campaign started in 2007 and was well-received by the Covington, Washington community, ballooning from 100 participants to 800 in just two months.
