Five Places on Campus You Should Know About

Multi-Purpose Room

As a new student last year, I was informed about a lot of campus activities taking place in the Multi-Purpose Room. Unfortunately, everyone failed to mention exactly where it is. The Multi-Purpose Room is behind the cafeteria. You can access it via the door in the back of the cafeteria dining hall—beside the door to the Cardinal CafĂ©—or by the northeast entrance to the Campus Center, which also leads to the cafeteria.
Throughout the year, the Multi-Purpose room is host to lectures, movie screenings, committee meetings, luncheons, speeches, receptions, and dozens of other events for the students and community.

Lewis Hall Courtyard

I was only recently tipped off about this gem of a hiding place, while researching some other articles. At the west-most end of Lewis hall, there is a courtyard. It’s surrounded by slightly overgrown landscaping, and it seems to have slipped through the cracks a bit where maintenance is concerned. If you’re like me, and don’t want to be cooped up while you’re getting some work done, then this is a great spot. Just dust some leaves and needles off of one of the many tables and settle in for some peace and quiet. Currently, the northern end of this space is blocked off by construction fencing, but you can still get to it by walking the long way around Lewis Hall, between it and the new building.

TV Lounge

This may be the best-known of the least-known places on campus, but it’s earned a bad reputation as being a cave for the socially challenged. While it is true, you may see more J!NX swag than lettermen’s jackets, if you happen to be a Frag Doll or a technophile, you can find more of your own kind passing time here. It’s inevitable that someone is sequestered in a corner, slumped over their laptop, furiously trying to cap the Fel Reaver Ruins.

Student Life Office

The number one most under-utilized resource at Skagit Valley College is the Student Life office and the hardworking people who can be found there. Laura Morris and Melanie Brauer are highly motivated to get students involved in activities, clubs, committees, and programs that are available to SVC students. You can find information on student health services, Student Government, campus activities, and clubs. This is also where many of the Student Government officers can be found during their office hours.
The Student Life Office is located behind the Financial Aid Office. To find it, enter the hallway opposite the Counseling Offices, go past the TV Lounge, and take a left. Melanie and Laura can usually be found in the back of the office area, and are both extremely helpful individuals who are happy to answer your questions.

Quiet Study Lounge

One of the most common complaints I’ve heard about working on group projects is that the college campus is very limited on workspace outside of the classroom. The library doesn’t allow you to talk to your study partners, and the more public areas around campus are just too public. There’s a little-known study lounge in the back of the Campus Center. You can find it by leaving through the back of the cafeteria (it’s directly across the hall) or entering through the northwest entrance of the Campus Center. The room has plenty of tables, lots of natural light since its virtually all windows, and provides a place where you can actually hear someone speaking to you. Just remember that it’s a study room, so be respectful of the other hardworking occupants.
